Proton Decay and Realistic Models of Quark and Lepton Masses

چکیده

It is shown that in realistic SUSY GUT models of quark and lepton masses both the proton decay rate and branching ratios differ in general from those predicted in the minimal SU(5) supersymmetric model. The observation of proton decay, and in particular the branching ratio B[(p → π+ν)/(p → K+ν)], would thus allow decisive tests of these fermion mass schemes. It is shown that the charged lepton decay modes p → K0μ+, p → K0e+ arising through gluino dressing diagrams are significant and comparable to the neutrino modes in large tanβ models. Moreover, it is found that in certain classes of models the Higgsino-mediated proton decay amplitudes are proportional to a model-dependent group-theoretical factor which in some cases can be quite small. There is thus a natural suppression mechanism which can explain without adjustment of parameters why in the context of SUSY GUTs proton decay has not yet been seen. The most interesting such class consists of SO(10) models in which the dominant flavor-symmetric contribution to the up-quark mass matrix comes from an effective operator of the form 16i16j10H45H , where 〈45H〉 points approximately in the I3R direction. This class includes a recent model of quark and lepton masses proposed by the authors. From Neutrino Masses to Proton Decay

Current theoretical and experimental issues are reviewed in the light of the recent SuperKamiokande discovery. By using quark-lepton symmetries, derived from Grand Unification and/or string theories, we show how to determine the necessary neutrino parameters. In addition, the seesaw neutrino masses set the scale for the proton decay operators by “measuring” the standard model cut-off. The Super...

Holographic Grand Unification

We present a framework for grand unification in which the grand unified symmetry is broken spontaneously by strong gauge dynamics, and yet the physics at the unification scale is described by (weakly coupled) effective field theory. These theories are formulated, through the gauge/gravity correspondence, in truncated 5D warped spacetime with the UV and IR branes setting the Planck and unificati...

Eliminating the d = 5 Proton Decay Operators from SUSY GUTs

A general analysis is made of the question whether the d = 5 proton decay operators coming from exchange of colored Higgsinos can be completely eliminated in a natural way in supersymmetric grand unified models. It is shown that they can indeed be in SO(10) while at the same time naturally solving the doublet-triplet splitting problem, having only two light Higgs doublets, and using no more tha...

From Prototype SU(5) to Realistic SU(7) SUSY GUT

We construct a realistic SU(7) model which provides answers to many questions presently facing the prototype SU(5) SUSY GUT. Among them are a solution to the doublet-triplet splitting problem, string scale unification, proton decay, the hierarchy of baryon vs lepton number violation and neutrino masses.

String compactification, QCD axion and axion-photon-photon coupling

It is pointed out that there exist a few problems to be overcome toward an observable sub-meV QCD axion in superstring compactification. We give a general expression for the axion decay constant. For a large domain wall number NDW , the axion decay constant can be substantially lowered from a generic value of a scalar singlet VEV. The Yukawa coupling structure in the recent Z12−I model is studi...
